The Differences in Hardwood Flooring

May 26, 2022 By admin

Hardwood flooring adds a time proven comfort to any room. With its reminder of nature and firm yet flexible surface, along with the décor options it brings, hardwood flooring is an easy choice for interior design projects.

There are three main types of hardwood flooring available on the market today: unfinished, prefinished, and engineered.

Unfinished Hardwood Flooring

Unfinished hardwood flooring is installed, sanded to a level surface, then finished and sealed. It allows for the most customization to a project area, masking any imperfections in the subflooring beneath and allowing for unique finishes tailored to the space. This increased customization brings with it an extended installation process best left to the professionals. The same process of sanding and finishing can be repeated several times as the wood itself slowly is sanded away, allowing for reinvention of a room as average use wears away the finish.

Prefinished Hardwood Flooring

Prefinished hardwood flooring is finished and sealed at the manufacturer, then is installed. It has a much quicker and less intrusive installation process than unfinished options, though still requires specialized tools and techniques best left to the professionals. Since the planks are not sanded to a smooth surface after installation, they do not mask imperfections in the subfloor. As with unfinished hardwood, prefinished planks can be sanded down and refinished when their surface becomes hazy from regular use. The manufactured sealant endures more than locally applied sealants and require the entire floor to be refinished if the room is to remain level.

Engineered Hardwood Flooring

Engineered hardwood flooring has a thin strip of finished wood sealed to a compound of industrial materials. Engineered hardwood flooring has the easiest installation, capable of being installed without any specialized equipment. They come in a similar variety of finishes as prefinished hardwood, though cannot be sanded down and refinished as its sealant turns hazy, like the other hardwood flooring options.

Carpeting Trends in 2022

March 25, 2022 By admin

Continuing the home improvement trends of the past few years, top interior designers and experts on style predict a focus on making the home welcoming and cozy. Bold colors, warm inviting designs, cushioning underfoot and fuzzy textures and materials reminiscent of the natural world will all be in high demand through 2022. Modern innovations in carpet production and installation have likewise led to easier to clean, healthier carpeting for your home.

Large Selection of Styles

From easy-to-match neutral tones to bursts of artistic expression and reflections of the outside world, carpeting is available to suit any design project. Traditional white pearl or beige carpeting works well in low-use areas or as a stable foundation for spaces that are often redecorated, while more striking patterns can be the basis for an entire room’s design.

With present-day production and installation techniques, carpeting is not relegated to the just covering the ground anymore, either. Walls, ceilings, banisters, and many other surfaces no longer suffer from buckling or slippage with professionally installed carpeting. Cozy up a den or bedroom with sound-dampening carpeting to truly make the space your own.

Natural materials like cork, jute, seagrass, sisal, and wool bring the calming properties of nature into our homes. Often less resource intensive than hardwood or ceramic, these natural materials present daily reminders of the outdoors. Synthetic options are perfect for any stain-prone households, as modern materials and cleaners have made persistent stains a thing of the past. With so many materials to choose from, working with a knowledgeable professional ensures you end up with the right carpeting for your project.

Practical

Wall to wall carpeting has been a popular choice in most applications for a long time, and it makes sense. Providing insulation, safety, style, and affordability while covering imperfections in the base floor, carpeting is an easy choice for large commercial applications and homeowners alike.

With many of us continuing to work from home, insulating our “offices” from the rest of the building is increasingly important. Carpeting and its padding absorb local sounds, cutting down echo, while insulating rooms from sounds below for a comfortable, more personal setting.

The padding and texture of carpeting is a safety factor, as well. Unlike hard flooring, carpeting has plenty of surface for our feet to grip onto, decreasing the risk of slipping. Should a fall occur, carpeting and its base provide more safety than hardwood or ceramic options.

At Fred Callaghan’s Carpet and Flooring Center, our professional designers are experts in top brands including Karastan, Masland, Stanton, Fabrica, and Shaw Carpet. A Guide to Buying Laminate Flooring

January 28, 2022 By admin

With so many styles available at multiple price points, laminate flooring is the right pick for many indoor flooring projects. Navigating these choices can become a project itself. Here are some tips to help you find the laminate flooring that’s right for you.

Pros to Laminate Flooring

Laminate flooring is a great option for indoor spaces with low regular water and moisture exposure. Available in a nearly endless array of styles, shapes, textures, and materials, there is a laminate flooring option that matches any indoor design project. From low cost, low hardness flooring perfect for a seldom trafficked closet, to premium cost extra hard flooring designed to withstand even the heaviest of public space traffic, laminate flooring is available for any budget and project. Best of all, modern innovations in production and installation practices have resulted in ever easier options.

Styles of Laminate Flooring

Laminate flooring can be crafted to match any interior design goals. Darker, wood-like laminate flooring captures the cozy feel of hardwood without the constant upkeep needs.  As a much lighter flooring material with less installation requirements than traditional ceramic and stone flooring, laminate stone-look flooring options match the vast array of sizes, shapes, colors, textures, and hues of ceramic and stone tile as a cost-effective alternative.

Ratings of Laminate Flooring

An engineered and artificially produced flooring material, laminate flooring is produced to varied and specific design requirements. Low-cost laminate flooring options are made for low-traffic areas, while higher cost options are engineered to withstand higher use needs. Laminate flooring designed for installation above ground level have different parameters than flooring options designed for basements. Knowing what grade you need for your project goes a very long way towards finding the laminate flooring that’s right for you.

The Abrasion Class (or AC) of the laminate is a measure of how hard its surface is. This indicates how much traffic it can withstand without degradation. Laminate flooring can have an AC of 1-5 (AC1-AC5), with AC1 representing the softest surface material designed for low traffic areas. Options with an AC5 are designed for high traffic areas like public buildings.

Installation Method Considerations for Laminate Flooring

Modern innovations in production have led to three dominant installation methods for laminate flooring, glued fixed installation, glued floating installation, and glue-less floating installations. A fixed installation requires the most time and skill, and usually costs a little more. The glue-less floating installation offers the greatest ease with installation. Knowing how your laminate flooring will be installed ensures clear expectations for the project budget and timeline.
